How Honest is too Honest?

They say that "honesty is the best policy." Yet honesty is one of the hardest things for humanity to live out, unless of course you are just temperament is to be super direct. At what point does honesty become...too much?

Honesty doesn't mean saying everything you think and feel, but where do we draw the line? Vulnerability is a necessity of humanity, and yet how vulnerable should one be? At what point does one move from healthy exposure to soul prostitution? Is it merely a matter of the heart and the intentions and expectation in one's giving that determine whether the vulnerability is right or wrong? or is there actually a point where one must cease? Should culture and society define this?

As you can see I have a lot of questions on the matter.

Lately I have found myself consumed by this subject of honesty. In my never ending quest for wholeness and understanding, I now find this at the forefront of my thoughts.

Sadly, I must say that I have come to no conclusions and confess my inability to think it all out at this time...and that frustrates the tar out of me!

It has occurred to me that, like many things that I question about life and reality, that there may not be a clear, black and white answer to my questions.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the matter? Any resources to look at to shed some light? Feel free to share!!!

Whole Desire

We all face questions and desires in the course of our lives and how we react to them shapes who we are and who we will become. For some, it is a subtle tingling in the back of their minds that whispers of an idea or proposes the the ghost of a question. These questions are distant and though they matter in a way, they are left in the shallow waters of desire and spontaneity, and often are answered without care or much thought. Yet there are some who simply yield to the wills and dreams of others, ignoring their own questions and passions.

For others, they cry to the world the pain of their inquiry. They beckon any to come and answer, ever seeking and wanting to examine every fragment of the question that leeches upon their soul. For them the questions are a matter of life and death; without an answer, purpose and passion cease. Actions are pointless. Life ends before it begins. they have yearnings to complete their accomplishments and forsake all else, hellbent on bringing their desires to pass.

I do not fall in either of these extremes. In fact, I 'd say I land dangerously close to the fence: filled with questions that, without answers, that are siphoning the life out of me, while also not caring enough to throw myself in to the torrent that might yield the clarity I seek. I have a great deal in my life that I desire to understand and things I wish to do, but I am unmotivated. I do not fully desire these things, for if I did I would surely seek to fulfill them. I do not wholly wish to know a foreign language, so I learn a few words and quit. I do not wholly wish desire to loose weight, otherwise I would face the pain and the struggle of exercise to accomplish this. I am lacking motivation and discipline.

What I am really dealing with here is a lack of intentionality and self-control.

I find that this is a continuation on the topic of "doing", which I wrote about briefly about a month ago. If I wish to "do", then my will must be brought into submission and I must realize (and accept) the pain and struggles that I will endure to accomplish my desires. To be fit is to exercise. To know a language is to study hard. Nothing comes without a cost, a price to be paid. To know the love of another demands time and empathy; it demands that one be willing to suffer. I am finding that this is the way of life. I am finding also that I have failed to see the value of what I would gain and have not been willing to cash the check.

So what about you? Is there anything that you have wanted to do but have not fully committed to? Perhaps it's a physical discipline, or a mental one? Maybe you have desire in the realm of the spiritual that has been left unfulfilled? Look at it, examine it, accept the cost, and decide for yourself "is it worth it?"

Let's get out and do something y'all. Let's move out of the realm of half-way desiring something into the realm of wholly desiring something that we might then go and fulfill them.

Grace and peace,

Stephen

"Respect"

It seems that I may have provided the wrong impression concerning my "not feeling respected". This was not me simply being on an ego trip or being down on myself. No, this was something far different.

We read about ancient civilizations and how people sought to have honor for themselves and their family. To BE honorable people, to BE people worthy of respect. This is kind of the angle I am coming from. I guess where I was coming from is the belief that I am not yet one to be honored. I believe that there is within m,e the power and characteristics that are necessary to be one that is respectable, but I have just not yet stepped into the position, or I have not yet begun to use those skills in a way that it is noticeable.

Now, let me be clear. The goal I have is not to do things so that I will get noticed, but instead to live out such a life of honor and discipline that it is noticeable without my seeking to be noticed. You tracking?

Here are some of the questions that I've been asking of myself:

  • "Do my words hold wisdom, or halfhearted babble?"
  • "Are my words reliable? Can people listen to what I say and know for a fact that I am honest and sincere?"
  • "Do I live out what I teach?"
  • "How do I interact with people around me? Am I a good example to others?"
  • "Is my lifestyle one that is honorable and reflective of my God and my love for Him?"
These are the questions I place before myself to filter and sum up myself for the purpose of improving myself and to become more disciplined. If you are reading this and you know me, or you have merely been reading my blog and think you have some insight into who I am, please feel free to comment, message, or email me (sgreen2049@gmail.com) and share your thoughts! Do you think I am a respectable person? Why or why not? What are so observations you might have about me to help me answer the questions above?

Also, examine your life! Ask yourself these questions and see what you come up with!

Peace be with you!

A House Divided

"The truth resolves somethings, and adds difficulty to others."                                              -A.W.Tozer
The last couple of days has been quite the emotional trip, but this morning I read this quote and was given a measure of hope. It seemed like it was just the thing i needed to hear to help my troubled mind. You see, a great number of people within my overall community structure have been at war over "getting out the truth" and engaging in (sometimes heated) debates over what should or should not be exposed. At first I wanted to name this post "Give me Justice or Give Me Journalism!", but then I decided that that is not the route I wanted to take with my post. Besides...what was done in the name of journalism can hardly be labeled as such. That's beside the point.

The point is that there has been a line drawn and people have taken sides. Who's right? Who's wrong? Well, if we looked at it honestly and without bias (not an easy task mind you), and tried to look at the whole situation holistically...the answer to both questions is...well..."both" haha. Both parties are right...and both are wrong.

Now before someone leaves a comment saying this is a cop out answer or yells "What the *bleep*?" at me, let me explain.

Granted, I think that one party is more "right" than the other, but if we all would just shut up for just a moment and let down our barriers of pride and self-righteousness...then we could begin to see a little more clearly what the other group is saying.  Both sides have at least one valid point to make and something that can be learned from the other.

I think that key things for us to learn here are:

  • Respect for those we have put ourselves under/God has put over us.
  • Respect for those who have a differing opinion and the decency to listen well before making a rebuttal.
  • Realization that just because someone has the right to do something, doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
  • Sin breeds sin.
  • Grace breeds grace.
  • Christians are supposed to live in a 200% reality in which they are 100% about grace and 100% about justice.
  • We don't always see everything, so we shouldn't ever act like we do.
  • and that Jesus clearly said "blessed are the peace makers"
When do something for the sake of doing it, then we aren't doing it with purpose. We should be people who think things through before acting and ask questions like "What will this accomplish?", "Are there consequences and do they affect more than just me?", "Is it beneficial?", "Does my not doing this have repercussions or benefits?", and ultimately  "Does it glorify God?"

I think that if these questions had been asked by BOTH parties...a lot of strife could have been avoided this week. I love you all and I pray that God will do a work in all our hearts and that things like this will bring about unity in the end (as my Arabic friends say Enshallah).

Peace be upon you all,

Stephen
